If you’re a Canadian citizen living outside Canada, you must show that you plan to live in Canada when the persons you want to sponsor become permanent residents as you can’t sponsor someone if you’re a permanent resident living outside Canada.

For sponsoring any of the Categories above, you have to prove to that you could financially support the family member and provide the basic needs when they are with you in Canada.

Obligations to the sponsor

The obligations of the sponsor are two folds. First, the sponsor agrees to ensure that family members receive the support they need to establish themselves in Canada so that they will not require social assistance and not become a burden on the community. Second, the sponsor agrees to repay the Canadian Government for any social assistance payments made by the sponsored family members. The undertaking is unconditional and may not be terminated.

Duration of the Undertaking

The undertaking comes into effect either on the day the foreign national enters Canada with a temporary resident permit or on the day the foreign national is admitted to Canada as a permanent resident. The duration of an undertaking can vary from 3 to 20 years depending on the age of the person being sponsored and the relationship of the person to the sponsor as set out as follows:

  • 3 years for a spouse or common-law or conjugal partner to the sponsor
  • 10 years of age 22 whichever comes first, for dependant child who is less than 22 years of age and is a child to the sponsor, or the sponsor’s spouse or common-law or conjugal partner
  • 3 years for a dependant child who is 22 years of age and over and is a child to the sponsor, or the sponsor’s spouse or common-law or conjugal partner
  • 20 years for the Sponsor’s parents or Grandparents and an accompanying dependant child
  • 10 years for anyone else
